Top Ten Film Locations to See on a Holiday to North Africa

May 15, 2009 by admin

North Africa is a perfect place for filming; it has sweeping vistas, it has seas of sand, it has the Mediterranean, it has new buildings and old alleyways in ancient and bustling cities. In fact, all the attractions and opportunities that make it a great place for filming also makes North Africa great for holidays. We examine the top ten film locations that, along with the other attractions, mean that any North African holiday will be as exciting as it is exotic…

10. The English Patient

The English Patient was filmed in Mahdia and Nefta in Tunisia. The shifting sands and small oasis town feel of the locations almost became another character in the film as the love story played out over them.

9. The Life of Brian

A less straight-laced film at number 9, with Monty Python’s Life of Brian. The film was filmed almost exclusively on location in Tunisia, and includes the Amphitheatre at El Djem, the Kasbah of Sousse and several other towns and areas. One of their most controversial and best films, Brian included all the ‘Pythons’ in various parts as well as half of ‘Goon’ Spike Milligan. Only half of the footage with his character is actually Spike. The pythons met him and got him to film some scenes, but he himself was on a holiday in North Africa, and left to carry on his holiday with only half of his part done!

8. Cleopatra

As you’d imagine, parts of this epic were filmed on location in Egypt. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor engage in epic war and love scenes close to the Pyramids and over the desert sands – a classic film, it’s low on our list because most holidays to North Africa that go to Egypt will go for the history of the Pyramids and the middle kingdom rather than to see where the stars may have stood.

7. Death on the Nile

A Peter Ustinov classic, Death on the Nile is a great film that seems almost like an advert for holidays in North Africa and Egypt all on its own! The film shows all of the main Egyptian sights, from Luxor to Giza, and is scenic and riveting.

6. Black Hawk Down

Black Hawk Down was filmed almost entirely in Morocco, using many of the soldiers who were actually in the raid the film depicts. The real life battle took place in Mogadishu, but those looking for the locations on a North African holiday will enjoy trips to Kénitra Airbase and Rabbat in Morocco where the bulk of the film was made.

5. Laurence of Arabia.

With “Arabia” in the title you’d think that this 60’s David Lean classic would have been filmed somewhere on the Arabian peninsula. However, most was filmed in Spain and several other locations such as California, Jordan, Morocco and Wales. The Moroccan aspect was filmed in Ouarzazate, a famous city in southern Morocco that is more castle or citadel than city.

4. Gladiator

A more modern epic, Gladiator also filmed several of its scenes in Ouarzazate, the ancient roman architecture fitting in with the run down province where Maximus becomes a Gladiator for the first time. Ouarzazate is well worth a visit on a Holiday in North Africa, for its own history and culture and for its long history of film production.

3. Raiders of the Lost Ark

Indiana Jones always chooses the most interesting places to go on ‘holiday’. The North African city of Sousse was the location for some of the Raiders of the Lost Ark shoot, in particular the famous scene where Inde comes up against a sword master and lazily draws his gun and shoot him rather than get up close. There was a whole scene planned out for this fight, but Harrison Ford (and everyone else in the cast and crew apart from Spielberg) had very bad diarrhoea, and told the director “Why doesn’t he just shoot him and get it over and done with?”

2. Star Wars

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away was actually 1977 and Tunisia. The sweeping sands and rocky crags of the country made it perfect for the desert plant of Tatooine in George Lucas’s space epic, and the set for Luke Skywalker’s home is a popular tourist destination for fans on holiday in North Africa.

1. Casablanca

Casablanca is the perfect movie from North Africa, with one small problem; none of it was filmed there! While cheating a little, the film still comes number one in our list as you can visit the city and go to Rick’s Café Américain, a tribute bar in the same style as the original set. A great place and city to visit on your holidays to North Africa.

Planning Your Trip to South Africa

The beauty of a self-drive holiday is that there doesn’t even have to be a plan. You can go with the flow and in true African style, go where the wind takes you. The only problem with this is that it can be a little stressful making sure that you have a place to stay each night if you keep changing your route! A planned itinerary is the best way to have a relaxing holiday as all your hotel accommodation and routes will be booked in advance, leaving you with nothing to worry about except taking in the sights.

Self-Drive Holidays in South Africa

South Africa is a country of immense natural beauty, intriguing cultural sites and many exciting attractions. A holiday here can never encompass everything that South Africa has to offer, but one of the best ways to see as much as possible is by driving yourself. The flexibility offered by a self-drive holiday means that you can see the attractions and places that appeal to you, although sometimes in a country as diverse as South Africa, the choice can become overwhelming. But with a little forward planning or the help of a tour operator, self-drive holidays can really work for you.

A Coastal Itinerary

South Africa has everything from spectacular coast lines to game parks and one of the best ways to see the best that the country has to offer is to drive yourself and be able to include both of these in your itinerary.

Start out in the sleepy little city of Port Elizabeth. The unique blend of modern amenities and old-world values make for a lovely atmosphere and the beaches are among the finest in the world. The international airport makes getting to this city easy and it is an ideal place to sleep off jetlag in preparation for your holiday.

Next head up the coast to the Addo Elephant National Park. Here you can get up close to many of South Africa’s more natural inhabitants in an unrivalled safari experience.

Include some of South Africa’s rich history in your self-drive tour and stop off at the frontier site of the 1820 Settlers as well as the historic and beautiful town of Grahamstown.

On your next stop at the Nelson Mandela Museum you can learn more about this fascinating leader’s life and leave feeling more than inspired.

The drive up into KwaZulu Natal’s capital city of Durban traverses the beautiful wild coast

with numerous picturesque places to stop. The beaches and nightlife of Durban offer enough fun and excitement to keep you busy for days.

Choosing a Pre-Planned Self-Drive Holiday

While a self-drive holiday offers you many freedoms, going through a reputable tour company in the beginning can give you the best of both worlds. Using an online booking reservation portal or travel company helps you plan out your ideal itinerary and includes many added extras that you would not be privy to otherwise. Planning your self-drive through one of these companies also gives you peace of mind as each of the accommodation options are guaranteed to be reputable with the most incredible and worthwhile attractions being the ones featured below.

Many pre-planned self-drive holidays include extra features like:

Airfares and airport transfers as well as ‘meet and greet’ at the airport to assist with any administration matters.

Car hire is usually included, often with discounted car hire rates or insurance due to a company’s affiliation with a particular car rental agency.

A GPS navigation system for the car ensuring that you don’t get lost.

Document packs that include maps, suggested routes and detailed information on each place you will visit.

A free rent-a-fone ensuring that you can be in constant contact with family back home or your tour organiser should you need to, 24 hours a day.

Complimentary tickets to some attractions or a VIP card to give you exclusive or discounted access to certain places.

Free access to private emergency services.

Whatever you decide to do – just enjoy the experience!

A Special Weekend Getaway to Hermanus, South Africa

May 5, 2009 by admin

Between June and December every year you can sit on the rocky cliffs overlooking the bay and watch the whales breaching, sailing, bobbing or just frolicking around in the waves.  August is peak time for calving and August and September are the months you will find the most whales in the bay. An incredible site that cannot be missed!

Boat based whale watching is offered from Hermanus where one can get within a few metres from the whales. The Whale Show is offered, a unique whale and dolphin audio-visual presentation that runs twice daily (10h00 & 15h00) at the Whale Museum – A worthwhile show that provides you with detailed, fascinating information on our gentle giants.

Not too far from Hermanus is the Great White shark cage diving mecca, Gansbaai. Six nautical miles away is Dyer Island, possibly the best place in the world to view these magnificent predators. The island is a bird sanctuary and a breeding site for the African penguin and many other coastal birds. Adjoining it is a second, smaller rocky island called Geyser rock, which supports a large seal population. Separating Geyser and Dyer is a channel aptly named “Shark Alley”, arguably THE prime spot in the world for encountering the Great White shark. The cage diving is an exhilarating experience and a “must do”

Blue Gum Country Estate kindly invited me to come and stay for the weekend. Accepting the offer with glee, I disappeared from the hustle and bustle of the city driving only 2 hours to arrive in the Overberg region. Blue Gum is situated on the slopes of the Klein River Mountains just outside Stanford only 20min past Hermanus. It offers a luxury country lodge feel, superb service, great food and beautiful surroundings. After arriving in the late afternoon, I was invited to the cosy lounge area to enjoy tea and scones with jam and fresh cream.

Unfortunately I chose the worst weekend to get away. The weather turned really grim and 3 consecutive cold fronts bringing massive amounts of rain, hit the western cape. Thousands of people were left stranded, homes washed away particularly in the poorer rural areas. The Klein River, which Blue Gum Lodge overlooks, came down in flood and completely washed the bridge away between us and the outside world! I must have arrived at about 16h00 and by 17h30 water rushed over the bridge preventing the remaining guests from joining us for the night. They were forced to retreat to Stanford.

Rain belted down during the night, thunder and lighting created a dramatic atmosphere. The guests huddled inside around large cosy fireplaces after a great 3-course dinner, the friendly staff offering nightcaps. I got chatting to a fun English couple, Douglas and Nicky who were visiting the area hoping to go Shark Cage diving. Much to their disappointment this was called off due to the bad weather. Douglas was celebrating his 40th birthday this day so we enjoyed a couple drinks over a game of Trumps, a card game introduced to us by Douglas. Louise the lodge manager joined us and merrily served us more and more tequilas and Jagermeister as the night went on. I retreat to my luxury spacious room before things got too out of hand!

In the morning we heard about a back route out from the lodge to Stanford that travelled through farmlands at the base of the mountain, a rough gravel road crossed by 3 little rivers that tested our off road driving skills in our low laying city cars. Nic, the owner of the lodge, led the way in his pickup truck assisting us where possible. The largest river at one point was approximately 25cm deep at its deepest point and about 6m wide, all very well if you were driving a 4×4, but most of us weren’t! After a couple of knocks and bumps and much adrenalin racing through our bodies, we made it! Only to return again later in the afternoon once we had enjoyed our days excursions.

Blue Gum offers a number of activities although all weather dependant, such as horse riding, mountain biking, quad biking, tennis, hiking and boat cruising on the Stanford River. The Birkenhead Brewery is just down the road. From Wednesday to Friday at 11h00 and 15h00, one can enjoy a tour of the brewery and learn how the beer is made. The tastings can be enjoyed everyday at the restaurant and it is nice to combine it with a pub lunch.  After enjoying the good service at Blue Gum, I was disappointed with the service here though.

I returned to the lodge for an afternoon nap, happy to see that the rivers had subsided a bit making the road a little less of a challenge. At 18h00 I awoke with a knock on my door. Delicious snacks and an aperitif were brought to me. What a nice surprise! I sat in the quietness of my room enjoying cheese and biscuits and fresh fruit served with white sherry while looking onto the beautiful Klein River Mountain.

Although Blue Gum Lodge is a lovely place to get stranded, we were all hoping that the rain would ease off. If more rain fell, even the back road would become a problem. All the rivers subsided nicely by the morning, I checked out and said my farewells to everyone at the lodge and commenced my journey home.

Car Hire South Africa: Packing Tips for the Long Road

May 5, 2009 by admin

Many travellers find the best way to explore a foreign country is to go on a road trip facilitated by means of car hire. South Africa is no different. A vast, beautiful country supporting a broad variety of eco-systems and boasting a plethora of activity opportunities, South Africa really is the place to be. Car rental in South Africa is an affordable and dependable means of transport and travelling at your own pace means you will have the opportunity to stop and enjoy any and all obscure road-side pleasures. Travelling along the Garden Route, you might wish to stop and stroll through the indigenous forests; while the Karoo and its legendary hospitality could tempt you to pull over at a dinky roadside café to have koeksusters and enjoy some local colour.

But travelling by car can be a complicated business. Packing a whole family AND all of their possessions into a vehicle is no easy task. It would be easy enough to chuck everything in haphazardly but chances are you would end up with too little space. Furthermore one has to take into account the safety aspect – even small, lightweight objects like tissue boxes can transform into dangerous projectiles in the event of a collision. In South Africa, car rentals frequently come with handy booklets of information on road safety, local traffic regulations, etc., but safety measures should be taken even before you get on the road – here are a few useful tips:

1. Check the children’s car seats first. A frightening percentage of children are incorrectly restrained while travelling by car. Before you even begin to pack make sure that the children’s safety seats are properly installed. If you have time, read over the owner’s manuals or have an AAA expert check your installation.

2. Make sure every little thing is in its place. In the unfortunate event of a crash it is important that any would-be projectiles are correctly secured. Pack as much as you can into the enclosed trunk space and strap down anything that is stored in the cargo area. Also check that the seatbelts are all functioning correctly.

3. Organise. Cars hide a treasure-trove of nooks and crannies ready to be filled with small items that will be handy for the road. Vehicle supply stores stock nifty products to keep them organised. Seat covers with pockets can be used to stow things like maps, phones and snacks. Have one in front for the grownups and one at the back for the kids. Use visor organisers to hold maps, CD’s and directions.

4. Looking back. Rear visibility is of utmost importance. Make sure you don’t stack your luggage so high that you will be unable to see out. An obscured rear window makes driving very difficult and creates considerable risk when driving backwards.

5. Pack a safety kit. Reserve a prime spot for a roadside emergency kit. Pack it with a reliable flashlight, fresh batteries, jumper cables, a first-aid kit, wetwipes, energy bars and bottled water. At this time it might also be a good idea to have a look at your spare tire and make sure that it will hold up in the event of an emergency.

6. Keep it cool. If you are setting out for someplace hot make sure you have a cooler box set aside for items which melt like lipstick and crayons. This box can also be used to store liquid containers that might leak, like sunscreen bottles. Keep it cool with frozen gel packs that stay cold longer than ice would.

7. Long division. Instead of stuffing all your belongings into one big piece of luggage, rather load it into individual pieces that are easier to handle. Colour code them with stickers and ribbons i.e., blue for beach things, red for toiletries, yellow for camping equipment. This way it will be easier to know which one to grab.

8. Heavy weights first. Put the heaviest items as far forward as possible in the cargo area and keep them confined to the floor. This reduces the potential negative effect on vehicle handling that could be caused by the cargo weight.

So now you know. By adhering to a few simple rules you and your family can travel as safely as you possibly could. Why not make your next holiday an African adventure? Car rental in South Africa is the most reliable way to enjoy a hassle-free family trip.
